Where we stand with the regulator.

Sponsored participation today, the Reserve Bank's modernisation programme, and what its own Cash Smart Strategy says about the direction of travel.

Participation

SommaRedde operates within the National Payment System through sponsored participation under a sponsoring bank, the route available to non-bank participants under the current dispensation. The South African Reserve Bank's Payments Ecosystem Modernisation programme is reshaping how non-banks are authorised, and the functions of the Payments Association of South Africa have moved to the Reserve Bank.

We have approached the Reserve Bank and are in correspondence about authorisation to operate an instant payment switch for wallets when the new framework allows it. E-money authorisation, and the capital that goes with it, is SommaRedde's to carry, not a sponsoring bank's.

The Cash Smart Strategy

The Reserve Bank's Cash Smart Strategy position paper of May 2026 finds that retailer cash-back at the point of sale is the most efficient cash-access channel in the country, and names cash-to-digital bridge models, retail stores enabling cash deposits into mobile wallets, as the direction of travel. That is the rail described on this site.
